Annual Events

Spring Banquet

ACM Lamar's biggest event, the Spring Banquet provides students and faculty alike with an opportunity to enjoy food, fellowship and a lecture by a distinguished guest speaker from the field of Computer Science. This formal event is ordinarily held in mid-to-late Spring, on the top floor of the Mary and John Gray Library.

International Collegiate Programming Contest

ACM International organizes an international programming contest annually, where qualifying teams of three students from universities around the world compete to solve computing problems. The contest begins locally, where each school holds a local qualifying round to select the team(s) that will compete with other universities at the regional level. Although Lamar has never advanced to the international round, we usually place well at regionals (10-20 of 60). The team chosen to represent Lamar at the regional competition enjoys a trip to LSU and the unique experience of competiting in the ICPC.

Computer Science Day

Our department chair, Dr. Osborne, sets aside one day in the Spring where Computer Science classes are cancelled for a day, to be replaced by ACM-organized activities. Typical events include computer assembly and Google search contests, movie showings, student lectures and, of course, sleeping in.

Officer Elections

Officer elections are held annually in either December or January, during the usual meeting time. Any member is welcome to run for office and encouraged to vote! Choosing officers who are serious about maintaining and improving the organization can mean more frequent, enjoyable activities throughout the year.

Other Events

Membership Drives

Designed to raise awareness about both ACM International and ACM Lamar, the occasional membership drive lures unsuspecting students into the commons with free pizza and soda for a short presentation on ACM Lamar's local activities, as well as the benefits of joining ACM International.

Book Sale Fundraisers

ACM organizes a book sale once or twice each year, where relatively new textbooks on Computer Science topics are made available to students at a very low price (usually $5.00 per book). The books available for purchase have been donated by faculty members who are more than happy to simultaneously rid themselves of extra books and benefit both the ACM and CS students.

Student Workshops

On occasion during the Spring semester, ACM members volunteer their time to give short presentations on Computer Science topics not ordinarily covered in the core curriculum. Presentations usually deliver on Friday afternoons, and are open to everyone free of charge. Example topics include : graphics programming, buffer overflow, game AI, web scripting languages and basic network programming.
